An amendment to the Illinois Wage Payment and Collection Fact (IWPCA) that takes effect on Jan. 1, 2019, will require employers to reimburse employees for expenses or losses directly related to the services the employee performs.
Employers need to create written reimbursement policies in advance, which may include reasonable caps on expenses and other guidelines.
Potential claims include vehicle expenses, mobile device charges, home office expenses, and Internet fees. In their written policies, employers should specific what they exclude and why. An attorney review of the policy would provide a logical safety net.
