State Passes Wage Disparity Act for Blacks

Late in November, Illinois legislators passed H.B. 4743, amending the state’s Equal Pay Act to prohibit employers from paying black workers less than non-black workers.

Though wage disparity based on race was already covered by the Illinois Human Rights Act and by federal laws, the new statute was designed as a reminder and wake-up call.

Effective next Jan. 1, no employer can pay a black worker less than a non-black “for the same or substantially similar work on a job that requires equal skill, effort, and responsibility and is performed under similar working conditions.”
